Going up against established giants like Mercury and Yamaha might not sound like the smartest business plan, but LEHR has seen its fledging outboard line grow since it was launched in 2012. The green and black outboards, in four models from 2.5hp-15hp, run on propane.

Bernardo Herzer started California-based LEHR with propane-driven lawn mowers. But seven years ago, he saw an opportunity in marine with tighter EPA emissions regulations forcing outboard manufacturers to move to four-stroke technology. LEHR’s solution: use fuel that has 97% less particulate emissions, is easily obtained, and not particularly wearing for the engine.
